We share the sad news that Charles Baber passed away at 82 years of age, peacefully in his sleep on the night of 1 May 2012.  Charles leaves Nina, his loving and devoted wife of more than 50 years; their children Juliet, Anthony, and Rupert; and their families.

Charles was an Honorary Life Member of the Waterberg Nature Conservancy.  We recognized his life-long involvement and leadership in many spheres of Waterberg activities.  He had been a successful Bonsmara cattle farmer since 1949.  He was involved in local conservation and tourism activities, both of which reflected his great pride in and promotion of the Waterberg.  He was renowned for his local knowledge, his hospitality and his ever-present sense of humour.  He worked tirelessly to break down divisions between elements of our complex society and to build, in their place, bridges of constructive dialogue.  The fruits of this effort are manifest in the very high regard with which he was held throughout our community.  In recent years, Charles wore well the mantles of Patriarch of the extended Baber family and Story Teller to anyone interested in the Waterberg.  A fourth-generation resident, Charles’ personal insights into Waterberg history and his Farm Tours never failed to delight and enlighten.

Charles will be terribly missed by his family, his many friends, and so many others who admired him.  We offer our deepest sympathies to Nina, Juliet, Ant, Rupert and their families.

Sibusiso Vilane, our favourite climber and explorer, recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro (the eighth time he has led a group), this time in the company of his daughter Setsabile.

Waterberg landowner and WNC member Mark Dieltjens has once again donated generously towards the Conservancyʼs education projects, making him our first Founder member.

Thanks Mark, your support is greatly appreciated.
